Friday Findings: Some Extravagance in Amethyst (+Posh Mama Giveaway)

>> Friday, February 27, 2009

One gemstone and color that always exclaims extravagance to me is Amethyst. Perhaps its because the color purple has long been associated with royalty. Or, maybe its because in its most precious and rare form, amethyst is as highly prized as the diamond. Ranging in tones from the lightest lilac to the deepest, darkest violet, Amethyst is also well known for being the official February birthstone.

But getting back to extravagance… did you know that the Greek's believed that Amethyst protected those who wore it from drunkenness? As the myth goes, the God of Wine (Dionysus) became angry with a mortal who did not want to partake in the joviality of intoxication from wine. In an extravagant act of fury, Dionysus vowed to get even with all mortals and relentlessly pursued a maiden who had never been intoxicated. Her name was Amethystos.

Like many tragic Greek myths go, Amethystos did not return the Dionysian sentiment and ventured off to seek protection from the God of Wine. This led her to the goddess Artemis who, in reply to Amethysto's desperate pleas for help, turned her into a white crystal stone. When Dionysus learned about how his pursuit of Amethystos, he felt deep regret and sorrow for his actions. So, in tribute to Amethystos, he poured wine over her and that dyed the crystals purple.

So, in honor of Dionysian extravagance and poor Amethysto's plight, I thought it would be nice to end February with a tribute. So, without further ado, enjoy today's Extravagant in Amethyst showcase featuring these beautiful amethyst-colored creations from some talented jewelry artists over at the online marketplace, Etsy.

Spiced Corn, Pepper & Butternut Squash Soup

>> Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Sooooo Easy:
Spiced Corn, Pepper & Butternut Squash Soup

I've really been into making soups in my crock pot lately, so here's a super easy semi-homemade recipe for the Crock Pot. I came up with this corny idea yesterday and the result was a deliciously spicy soup made with corn, red & yellow peppers, and butternut squash.

Since I tend to be one that is quite lazy when it comes to going to the grocery store, I just used what I had on hand in my freezer and cupboards. However, I'm pretty certain that I got all the ingredients that I used from the local Trader Joe's.

Here's how to make the soup:

(1) Throw the following ingredients into your crock pot and cook on Low until its hot. I had stuff to do, so I kept it in the crock pot for several hours. I would imagine you probably don't need to cook it for quite that long.

Main Ingredients:
1 bag frozen corn
1 jar fire roasted red & yellow peppers
1 box butternut squash soup

(2) Once its cooked a bit, use a hand blender to puree the mixture. Then, add the following spice mix to the soup and keep it on low until you are ready to serve.

Spice Mix:
1/4 tsp truffle salt
1/4 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp natural mexican vanilla extract
2 pinches anise
1 Tbsp minced garlic

I topped it off with a dollop of vanilla yogurt (like I said, I used what I had), a light sprinkle of Paprika, and a sprig of parsley. Yeah..the vanilla probably sounds weird, but the hint of vanilla was very good this soup :)

Walking the Red Carpet:

One of the things I miss most about living in Southern California is all the buzz that goes on when its Academy Awards season. So, tonight...I sat around in my finest and put my feet up to make jewelry and watch the stars step out onto the red carpet of Hollywood Boulevard for the 81st Academy Awards. I supplemented my Oscars fun by listening to tweets and watching TwitPic's for photo uploads. Here's my favorites:

Rain-Filled Weekend=Cottage Industry

It's been a rain-filled weekend here in Capitola, which makes it a perfect weekend to get ahead with my jewelry making. If you could be here... my tiny cottage has been converted to a jewelry manufacturing facility...I guess you could call it, my very own cottage industry.

This weekend, I've been hard at work making pieces for my Silicon Gallies collection. I've got gallies to make up the ying yang and they are literally everywhere! To get organized, I've set up work stations in various rooms. My living room is where I disassemble the laptop keyboards so storage bins are piled up in front of the fireplace.

The kitchen is where I wash and sterilize the glass tiles and keyboard keys. I run the tiles through the dishwasher and then hand-dry each piece with anti-bacterial wipes. And, since I'm not a fan of keyboard funk...I hand wash each key in hot water to remove any debris and then dip them in an anti-bacterial and set aside to dry. Once that is done, my kitchen table becomes my assembly area where I create the pendants.....

And then, I sit myself down for a spell to hand-string each necklace

....one...by...one...by...one...by..one...

And the whole time....the Little Prince of the house, Silver, sleeps peacefully next to me in his chair (except for when I try to take a picture of him, then he gives me "the look" that says..."hey, get that camera outta my face and don't flash that bulb at me...I'm sleeping you idiot!")

I just love rainy Sundays ;)

Saturday Sparkle: Today's SPARKLE is for the BIRDS

>> Saturday, February 21, 2009

Saturday Sparkle:

Today's SPARKLE is for the BIRDS

So, as many of you know, my name "Capitola Girl" comes from the town of Capitola which is one of the oldest seaside resort communities on the West coast. In truth, not many people know that Capitola even exists in the scheme of things, (which, I must admit, is kind of how many Capitolan's want to keep it). But, its a cute place with some interesting stories about it.

One of the lesser-known stories about the town of Capitola is that its the place that helped to inspire the Alfred Hitchcock thriller, The Birds. And, it's actually a pretty cool story....

Way back in 1961, Capitola was attacked by seabirds (sources: SCPL, Wikipedia and ViaMagazine). The birds wreaked havoc by attacking power lines, flying into homes and buildings (and were even reported to attack a few people!). Alfred Hitchcock was living in a neighboring town and working on a related storyline involving similar bird horrors... so when he heard about the avian craziness in Capitola, bits and pieces were incorporated into his story.

I heard about Capitola's affiliation with the Hitchcock thriller for the first time a short while ago, so when I awoke yesterday and sun was out... I stepped out on my porch to get the morning paper. I was compelled to duck because the sound of birds chirping was so loud -- LOL :)

I suppose you can say that's why "The Birds" became the "inspiration" for the theme of today's Saturday Sparkle post. However, today's bird-themed loveliness in this Saturday Sparkle showcase is far more friendly. And, the only thing these little birdie-jewels will attack you with is sheer cuteness...

Friday Findings: Steampunk Style

>> Friday, February 20, 2009

Today's Friday Findings showcase features a collection of indie-jewelry that fits into an aesthetic that takes modern visual imagery and filters it through the optimistic spirit of a Victorian-era-round-the-world balloon voyage. The look is called steampunk, and it’s a unique style that conjures the reminiscent spirit of a weird and fanciful universe.

As a style, steampunk is relatively modern. Steadily growing in popularity among the punk and goth subcultures during the latter part of 20th Century, it has an aesthetic-appeal that harkens back to the romance of the Victorian era. A time when the newness of steam-driven industry filled the world's eyes with possibility. Think Jules Verne and H.G. Wells--clouds of steam, exposed-gears churning, and the rose-colored futures driven by hope and optimism.

To me, the steampunk style in fashion is about as traditional as a bed of Old World Roses set in the whimsical factory-world of Willy Wonka. But whatever steampunk might be, one has to admit, its a look that simultaneously exquisite and whimsical. So without further ado, have a look at this collection of steampunk jewelry from an imaginative group of indie artists at the online marketplace, Etsy.
