Friday Findings: All the Rage of Resin

>> Friday, January 30, 2009

I've been noticing that using resin in jewelry-making has become quite the rage in recent years, so this week I thought I'd take a look at resin as a medium and show you some of the cool items indie artists make. As a synthetic medium, resin is type of liquid plastic that can be turned into a solid by adding a hardening agent. The result is a stylish, affordable and lightweight piece with a glassy surface…and its really versatile. You can find crystal-clear pieces that are translucent, as well as enjoy the modern simplicity of a more enamel-looking opaque.

If you take a look around on handmade artisan sites like the online marketplace, Etsy, and you find everything popping up in resin, from bangles and bracelets to necklaces, pins, earrings, and rings. Styles vary from simple to sophisticated, but no matter how you slice it...resin is all the rage.

Who Sparkled This Saturday?

ADDITIONS

Today on Saturday Sparkle, I'm taking an up-close-and-personal look at a jewelry artist who was showcased a few months back on my Friday Findings columns, where I wrote about Treasures Lost & Treasures Found.

To get you up to speed, Valerie William is an indie jewelry artist who runs the ADDITIONS shop with the help of her jewelry-loving teenage daughter. Together, this mother and daughter team has created a fun and funky line of modern jewelry that incorporates a diverse range of hardware store finds. I love their line because their pieces make a simple yet fun statement which allows jewelry lovers of all ages to keep their look fresh and current (at an affordable price!).

I had the opportunity to interview Valerie about her jewelry line this week, and she graciously shared her story with us. Here's what Valerie had to say:

Valerie, how did you get started in jewelry design?

Like a lot of people, I took a class and fell in love with the design process. The day after the class I bought tools, beads and all the supplies I needed to make jewelry. Once I started making jewelry I could not stop. I began with beadwork; moved to wire wrapping and then sliver-smithing. Many of my techniques are self-taught with a few classes in between to perfect my skills. Now I work with alternative materials from the hardware store and truly enjoy experimenting with a whole new medium. This shift has inspired renewed feelings of creativity.

What inspired you to turn your jewelry making hobby into a business?

After a few months of creating jewelry and giving pieces to all my family and friends I decided to enter a show. I was juried in and accepted. After receiving notice of my participation in the show, I found out it was a very hard show to get into. Apparently, artist from across the country juried to be in this show and being selected was exciting. At that point, I realized my jewelry designs were strong enough to sell and actually make money.

In the last year, I started my new collection Additions and launched my online business. Selling online is much different than selling at shows. It takes time for people to feel comfortable with you and your business to make that purchase online. Having a presence online by participating in forums and blogging has opened the door to building relationships and promoting my business. It is never-ending hard work, but I really enjoy it. This year I am working towards becoming a known brand online.

When creating a design, please describe your top three sources of inspiration…

The hardware itself is very inspirational for me. I find myself thinking ahead about experimenting with new combinations, adding texture, and using color. I spend hours in hardware stores searching for my next new piece of metal. I may not know the intended uses for each new discovery in the hardware store, but I can envision the future use.

I love books and magazines. I buy a variety books on jewelry design, textiles, contemporary furniture, and architecture. When I look through books, I study the shapes, surface design, and color combinations. I am inspired by all art forms and I learn from what I see and then translate it into my own designs.

Checking out today’s fashion and my teenage daughter’s fashion sense helps me stay current in my designs. When I started this collection, I wanted to create a fun contemporary line of jewelry that’s affordable. I read a lot of fashion magazines and try to follow some of the trends, but in the end I go with my daughter’s advice and so far so good.

Who in your life has provided you with the most support for your jewelry business?

I am very lucky to have a very supportive family including my parents, daughter, husband, and sister. My husband James is so wonderful he encourages me, believes in me and my success, and helps out whenever he can. My sister Pam is my backbone even though she lives in another state we communicate everyday, she gives me advice, makes me accountable, and pushes me to be my best. Without my family I would not be where I am today.

If you had any advice for a newbie to jewelry making and selling, what would it be?

Create work you love. It is easy to follow trends and to design what you think people want to buy, but if you do it to make money only, it will become a job you don’t enjoy.

Keep learning. There is much to learn about jewelry making, business, marketing and selling. Take classes, read as much as you can, and participate in discussions on and off line.

If you love it never give up. If you have setback, don’t give up, try it a different way, talk to new people, there is always something you can do, so believe in yourself.

It’s all hard work, and it takes time, so be patient. Always do as much as you can, never stop marketing online and off, provide outstanding customer service and the customers will come.

Thank you Valerie for sharing your story with us on Saturday Sparkle! And readers, please leave a comment for Valerie and be sure to visit her online storefronts at:

Friday Findings: Pretty Paper Jewelry

>> Friday, January 23, 2009

***Real Story***

During the early years of the dot.com boom, I went on a job interview at one of those uber-geeky technology companies that was purported to be running a semi-paperless office. Instead of greeting me with a hello, the hiring manager's first words to me were, "Which do you like more…paper or the web? " I looked at him somewhat puzzled by his awkward greeting and without giving it a second thought, I responded: Paper!

I was promptly informed that my answer was wrong, and if I needed proof about the oncoming obsolescence of paper, I could look to the example set by his 8 year-old son (who apparently..."did not require the use paper because of the advancements in computer technology"). In shameless truth, my response to his incredulous theory was, "perhaps your son would develop a greater appreciation for paper if you took him outside, stuck him up a tree and then told him the story of where paper comes from."

Needless to say, neither my mouth, nor I, were offered that job.

My reason for telling you this story is really not to put-down the idea of paperless technology (as I'm a blogger, after all), but rather to ask…"Don't you think the human imagination would be pretty hard-pressed to find a way to replace the tactile satisfaction and creative expression that paper spawns?"

I don't know whether it’s the reader, writer or crafter in me.. but the need to express ourselves on a tactical surface seems inherent to who we are. I'm all for conserving paper use where it makes sense, and despite my affection for my computer, I would be at a complete loss without a paper surface to express my creativity on. And, I have a feeling that some of you Posh Mama's out there might feel that way too…

…So, today on Friday Findings, I'm celebrating the joy of paper and paper crafts with a showcase of jewelry that melds the decorative appeal of the artful accessory with the whimsy that's present in paper crafts. And get ready to have fun, because the today's selection of pretty paper jewelry offers an abundant range colors, a diversity of patterns, and an array of textures that embrace the tactile rewards of the great combination of Paper+Us!

The Devil Wears Etsy: Bites of Brown

The Devil Wears Etsy:
Bites of Brown

Whether its rich like mahoganhy, dark like chocolate, or spicy like nutmeg, the earth-toned range of the color brown represents stability and abundance. It communicates strength, stability, and qualities of grounded-ness.

The color brown also evokes warmth and comfort (think morning coffee, chocolate chip cookies, and my personal fave--yummy brownies). Brown also strikes a chord with the spirit of dependability (for you Etsians who do shipping, think reliable...like UPS deliveries).

Today, I thought I'd take another hearty bite out of the fashion feast being served up at the online marketplace, Etsy. So, without further ado, I hope you enjoy these rich and delicious handmade treats from my Flickr group photo pool at The Devil Wears Etsy.

That's all the time we have today, so I hope you'll join us next week for another post. If you like what you see on The Devil Wears Etsy, be sure to leave a comment in today's post!

Free Makeup Tuesday: Cosmetics Class Action Settlement

So...I was chatting on the phone with a friend today and she asked me if I was going to the department store to pick up my $25.00 in free cosmetics. I had no idea what she was talking about, but according to a story in The Chicago Tribune...starting today, $175 million dollars of free cosmetics will be given away on a first-come/first-serve basis as part of a class action settlement.

Apparently, if your a US resident and visit one of the participating retailers, $25 of free merchandise will be given to you. You must sign a form stating that you purchased one of the products involved in the suit at one of the stores between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003. And, you don't need to bring a receipt or proof of purchase.

Well, this is all news to me and since I can't remember what I purchased yesterday much less 5+ years ago, I don't think I'll be going to the mall today...but if you like cosmetics and you're eligible and interested in reading about the settlement, I thought I'd pass the word along. You can learn more about the settlement by visiting the official website.

Saturday Sparkle: DiVanity Designs

Who Sparkled this Saturday?

DiVanity Designs

It's been a couple of week's since my last Saturday Sparkle post, and I'm excited that my holiday hiatus is over because it's a new year and in this week's Saturday Sparkle post, I get to share a story with you about talented owner of a new jewelry shop.

Today's featured jewelry artist is Cari, who lives in the Dallas area, and she's recently opened her DiVanity Design shop at the online marketplace, Etsy.

If you're a fan of beautiful faceted gemstones bracelets and necklaces or if you love dangling earrings that ooze with elegant and classically feminine grace---a visit to Cari's shop is a must! Here's some info about Cari and the inspiration behind her shop:

Cari, how did you get your start in jewelry design?

I started designing jewelry because I love handmade jewelry- I love wearing semi-precious stones and having unique designs. Then I started asking people to custom make items for me. After about 5 requests for custom items I decided it was time to see if I could make jewelry myself. I took one class and I was hooked! Of course I'm always taking more classes to learn new techniques, but I knew from the first class that this was something I wanted to do. Plus, I've always wanted to be a designer. When I was into my last year of grad school for my accounting degree I almost changed my major to Interior Design, but fated intervened and I couldn't get into the classes. It all worked out perfectly because Jewelry design is perfect for me!

What inspired you to turn your hobby into a business?

Well, I have an entrepreneurial spirit by nature- I tend to turn a lot of things into a business, but really, the ease of entry was a big factor and making jewelry is a blast! I knew I could at least start by selling online with a small inventory. Plus, I'm addicted to buying the beautiful stones I use in my jewelry. I have cases of beads in every color, type and size and I need to at least charge for my designs to recoup some of my investment. And I can't possibly wear all the stuff I make! Now, when I first started out I didn't intend to make a big deal out of this business, but now I really want to transition into this full time. Nothing would make me happier than to make jewelry all day!

What are your top three sources of design inspiration?

Number one is definitely the bead itself. I look at the gemstones, and they tell me what to do. The size and shape are a huge factor in how to design my jewelry. Honestly, I often just pick up something with the intent to work with it, and then I scan the rest of beads and it works itself out. I guess you would call it Divine Inspiration?

The second is being unique- my intention is to create unique jewelry that you won't find anywhere else, so if I am working with a regular briolette, for example, then I have to add something else to it- maybe a metal finding, or an unexpected stone attached the briolette- whatever is necessary to make the item unique but always classy. That is also the reason I make necklaces and bracelets with multiple strands- I think it makes it more interesting and diverse.

My third source of inspiration is nature. I often am inspired as far as color. For example, I recently was on the beach in Florida (where I grew up) and there were these amazing, uprooted trees. The roots were whitewashed from the sand and salt, and they were just beautiful with their shades of gray, white, and brown. I thought, this will make an amazing set of earrings!

Who in your life has provided you with the most support for your jewelry business?

The most supportive person in my life in regards to making jewelry is my good friend Lori. She is also my business coach and she is my accounting client (I am a CPA full time, for now!). She helps me focus and is a fantastic marketer- she's always telling everyone about my work. And, she's my best customer! Sometimes I bring over bracelets for her to try on (my wrist is small and I like to check my sizing on her wrist) and she ends up buying two or three of them. She gets my work, and that is so important to me. Plus, she's got great connections and that is always a good thing!

If you had any advice for a newbie, what would it be?

Believe in yourself and value your time. There are a lot of people who say the jewelry market is saturated, the economy is in the toilet, etc., etc., but you can succeed in any environment as long as you believe that you can! Have fun with your business but stay focused. Most people aren't very successful overnight. Also, value your work and your time. Don't be afraid to charge for your uniqueness!

Thank you Cari for sharing your story and wonderful jewelry designs with us.

Friday Findings: Glimmering Garnets

>> Friday, January 16, 2009

I've always loved the ancient-look and rich, deep-pomegranate color of garnet gemstones. Garnets have been used in jewelry since as far back as the Bronze Age and during the Medieval times, garnets were celebrated for its medicinal purposes.

In our more modern world, garnets are traditionally presented in the form of jewelry as gifts on 2nd year wedding anniversaries. Garnets are also celebrated as the official birthstone for the month of January. Since we're smack in the middle of the garnet month--I thought I'd put together a collection of Garnet jewelry for this week's post. So without further ado, check out these glimmering garnet gemstone jewelries from five very talented indie artists at the online marketplace, Etsy.
