Friday Findings: Wearable Music (+Posh Mama Giveaway)

>> Friday, March 6, 2009

I grew up in the 80's, a time when MTV was still a baby and record companies had not yet converted to releasing tunes in CD format. Still in my teens, I spent much of my time locked in my room listening to vinyl LPs on a turntable and cassette tapes on my extraordinarily large boom box.

As far as music goes, a lot has changed in the last two decades…music is now digital and portable. And while I love my iPod to the point where I'm starting to forget the last time I even used my CD player…my fondest music memories will always be from the days in my teens -- dancing in my room with my hairbrush microphone, playing in air-bands with a makeshift guitar pick, and hour-long trips to Tower Records to pick up the latest records and cassette tapes.

That's what is great about today's Friday Findings showcase, now that all of the things I used to do are obsolete, these artists are taking those obsolete music memories and mediums and turning them into works of jewelry art. Every independent artist featured below today has created a memorable piece using an artifact of the musical past--from a boom box memory in metal, to a reclaimed guitar pick necklace, as well as some amazingly cool and eco-friendly pieces using recycled vinyl LPs and CDs.

So, without further ado, have a look at how this talented group of Etsy artisans are reclaiming musical artifacts from the past and making them into musical mementos that you can wear in style today:

Confined Vinyl Record Necklace

Using reclaimed vinyl records, this reclaimed vinyl record necklace is cut into a groovy shape and comes with a 16"sterling silver chain that closes with a sterling silver lobster clasp. The pendant measures 3 x 2" at it's widest points and is available in this and a variety of other styles from arohasilhouettes.etsy.com.

Caesar Roman Record Cuff

A unique and majestic musical wrist cuff made from a recycled vinyl record. This bold piece features a hand-painted acrylic design in brown, orange and iridescent copper. It's also lightweight and comfortable. This cuff fits a small wrist (measuring 6-6.5 inches) and is also available in a medium-large size. Available from EyePopArt.etsy.com.

Schroeder Guitar Pick Necklace
BePicky.etsy.com

BePicky jewelry artist Rachel Thomas handcrafts every piece in this unique line guitar pick jewelry and accessories for music fans. Each guitar pick is attached to a chain using double-layered split rings, which ensures that the picks are securely attached. Available from BePicky.etsy.com.

This pendant is so striking and modern, I can hardly believe how it blends old and new by combining an upcycled black vinyl LP that is topped with a shining CD-Rom piece.
