Friday Findings: You Made That Out of WHAT?! (and weekly jewelry giveaway!)
>> Friday, October 17, 2008

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is when I happen upon a jewelry artist who designs with exemplary creativity. As a blogger, I see buzz words like UPCYCLED, RECYCLED and RE-PURPOSED so much that the words sometimes seem like commonplace jargon, but when you see how creatively these practices can be incorporated into jewelry, I think you'll agree that the result is anything but common!
This week on Friday Findings is a special treat for who anyone who is attracted to creativity: Its a collection of jewelry made from all sorts of unusual materials--everything from aluminum cans and magazines to recycled wood, plastics (and even insects!). Are you wondering where one might look to find such talent? Directly to the handmade artisans at the online marketplace, Etsy.
Give a Hand to this Pendant Made from Recycled Aluminum Cans

Recycled beverage and soda cans make a great conversation starter. This Red Eye Necklace is made from rescued and recycled aluminum drink and soda cans. The pieces are thoroughly cleaned, cut-out and shaped to ensure no sharp edges. Available in a variety of cans to fit your fashion from the urbanwoodswalker shop.
Shut Up and Kiss These Magazine Lips
http://belleslettres.etsy.com

A velvet ribbon and ten (10) pairs of completely kissable magazine lips are protected from steamy amore by laminated acrylic. In addition to a large selection of innovative jewelry like this Shut Up and Kiss Me Charm Bracelet, stop by the belleslettres shop on Etsy to view a stellar selection art pieces that include designer handbags, fake watches, and dresses.
Momma Always Said Never Ride Your Bike without a Reflector
http://jewelryfool.etsy.com

What could be safer (or more attractive!) than this gorgeous statement piece? The Safety Ring is designed from sterling silver and a brand-new bike reflector?! It makes a perfect gift for cyclists and would create a real stir among safety buffs. Custom designs in red reflectors are also available from the jewelryfool shop on Etsy.
Pop an Ollie (around your neck) with this Recycled Skateboard Pendant
http://2ReVert.etsy.com

One of the most unique materials for jewelry that I've found yet is this fashionably alternative pendant made from 100% post-consumer recycled skateboard decks. This 2in1 Dangle Necklace is crafted from 7 ply-maple wood deck that has been cut, sanded and sealed with non-toxic gloss. It's just one example of a wide variety of recycled skateboard jewelry from an eco-friendly company in Canada, the 2ReVert shop on Etsy.
Snug as a Bug (in a Wrist-Hug!)
http://KolosStudio.etsy.com

The high-intensity color of yellow lucite bangle is mixed with four exotic beetles purchased by the artist from a licensed insect dealer. These bold bangles are lightweight, stylish and add a splash of bug-like luminescence to your wrist. Marked with the studio's logo on the inside, these bracelets are available from the kolosstudio shop.
