Where in the World?
Mondello Bea
ch, Palermo, Sicily
For Where in the World Wednesday today, my jewelry-inspirations took me back down the slopes of the Monte Pellegrino to Mondello Beach in Palermo, Sicily. Monte Pellegrino is neither the mineral water place, nor is Mondello of relation to Leave it To Beaver's friend Larry.
Mondello is sandy-shored resort beach on the Mediterranean Gulf where seasoned fisherman sit in darling blue and red boats and little "bambini" run around playing with toys. The most touching part of the trip were watching gray-haired men in hats and caps sit on park benches. They reminisced about World War II, and greeted the American visitors piling off of tour buses as warmly as if they were American troops during the Allied Invasion. And, I can't tell you how many beautiful people were sitting under umbrellas enjoying the temperate Mediterranean sun. Ahhhhhhh, the life...
Anyway, back in California, we're having some uncommon good weather and sun. So I decided to reminisce about my days in Sicily by making this pair of MONDELLO GULF Earrings. Coral is a popular jewelry choice in Sicily, so I used red coral, sea-blue glass, and gold accents.
For me, these earrings are a little reminder of spending some fun days in Mondello, down the slopes from the Monte Pellegrino. I guess I now see why the Sicilian's say:
"Cui curriri pritenni 'ntra pinninu, e di giudiziu scavigghaiatu e 'nsanu"
(translation: those who run up slopes are confused and crazy)
