Make Me! Monday

The EMBER Necklace

Most every Monday, I write a post about the beads that we're screaming "Make Me" during the previous week. Well, this week, I was motivated to make a new piece for more reasons than just having cool beads. I recently joined a social network called Coach Creative Space, which is a Ning network and
interactive creative community space to help you be as creative as you've always known you can be. I'm part of a group on that site called Songs of the Senses, where each group member has been challenged to create a piece of artwork for each of the five senses - sight, sound, scent, taste, touch - plus one for a 6th sense of your choice.

The EMBER necklace above is the piece that I created for the sense of Touch. I chose to create a piece for the sense of Touch first, because I got some fantastic cloisonne beads recently. Since cloisonne beads are highly-textured, they seemed perfect to use for this theme. For a more subtle sense of texture, I deliberately decided to use Czech seed beads in a warm yellow/gold because, unlike Japanese seed beads which tend to be uniform in shape and sizing, the varying sizes of the Czech beads seemed like a more appropriate way to add even more texture to this piece.

I call the necklace EMBER, because the yellow, golds and copper tones evoke a sense of visual warmth to me. To me, the feeling of warmth is another touch sensation. I thought that the warm tones sort of captured the burning nature of glowing, hot coals. To see more photos of this piece, feel free to visit my shop on Etsy:

This blog first started as a way to share the inspiration behind jewelry making with family and friends. Next thing you know, my blogging became a hobby--complete with a logo!

In my not-so-virtual-reality, I'm a freelance technical and marketing communications consultant who spends her time doing geeky things in the high-tech industry. But my real fun comes from making jewelry, which you can find in my Etsy shop at: http://capitolagirl.etsy.com
