Have You Visited the Pear Project?

>> Monday, March 3, 2008

As a blogger, I spend a lot of time reading other people's blogs. One of the many sites that I like to visit from time to time is The Pear Project (http://thepearproject.blogspot.com). The Pear Project is a blog dedicated to finding unique artisan goods for everyday life. It was founded by an artist in coastal North Carolina, Brooke Fuller, whose mission is to introduce her readers to artisan made goods.

Another thing that I like about The Pear Project is the behind-the-scenes story. It's an example of someone who has integrated her professional advertising and marketing experience with her life-long love of independent art. In addition to showcasing her own projects from time-to-time, Brooke looks around and discovers the talent and craftsmanship of independent designers. I know from experience that doing this is something that takes dedication and hard work. Way to go Brooke!

Last month, The Pear Project sponsored a contest and I decided to enter it. Pictured below is the delightful bag that I won. I'd like to thank Brooke Fuller over at The Pear Project for sponsoring the contest, its a great bag and I'm excited for it to arrive!

In exchanging emails about the "win", I asked Brooke if she'd be willing to share a bit about her background and her hopes for The Pear Project, and here's what she shared with us:

About the Pear Project

The Pear Project is a new online shop dedicated to finding unique artisan goods for everyday life. It is a project that founder Brooke Fuller has had in the works for several years now. Artisan goods for everyday life is about buying, and enjoying simple handmade items. A purse can come from a department store, or you can buy something unique that was made in a small quantity. Not only do you have a gorgeous bag, but you are also supporting an independent artist or craftsperson who is making a career out of what they love.In the shop you will find bags & purses, household goods, jewelry, fine art prints & paper goods hand picked from a variety of submissions.

The Pear Project chooses well made items with a modern style, and utilitarian appeal to fill it's virtual shelves. It's the perfect place to find a variety of unique gift items for everyone on your shopping list!

About The Founder - Brooke Fuller

Although Brooke is the artist behind some items at The Pear Project, her love of sales and marketing inspired her to create a shop where she could offer goods by a variety of independent artists. Brooke has always been an artist at heart. As a child she always chose art classes at camp and spent my days creating things with her hands. Some of her earliest memories are sitting in my mother's large cardboard box of fabric under her sewing area thinking of all the wonderful things she could create.

This evolved into several zines including Wishing Well, Liquid Peppermint & Creamsicle as well as a zine distro also called Creamsicle during her teenage years. She always had the creativity to create things, and the drive to sell them. Brooke earned her BA in History from Gettysburg College, immediately followed by earning a certificate in Photography from The Hallmark Institute of Photography. She then worked as a photographer's assistant for 1 year followed by a position as a District Training Manager for Sears Portrait Studio for the next 2 years.

Then in early 2006 she decided to make a move from the Washington DC metro area to a quieter life in Coastal North Carolina. Here she gained experience in advertising and marketing at a local newspaper while planning the launch of The Pear Project. With the Grand Opening of The Pear Project she has been busy filling the virtual shelves with artisan goods she has found through the Internet as well as from the many applications she receives daily. From here she hopes to expand The Pear Project, and in the future start a wholesale business for some of her own artistic goods.

Well done Brooke! I enjoy visiting The Pear Project and wish you and your site the best of luck!

About This Blog

This blog first started as a way to share the inspiration behind jewelry making with family and friends. Next thing you know, my blogging became a hobby--complete with a logo!

In my not-so-virtual-reality, I'm a freelance technical and marketing communications consultant who spends her time doing geeky things in the high-tech industry. But my real fun comes from making jewelry, which you can find in my Etsy shop at: http://capitolagirl.etsy.com
