Night Pearl Necklace and Earrings

I've been very into making the pearly jewelry lately, so much so that my neighbor started calling me the pearly girl. I love the lustre and mystery that pearls seem to hold. Although the pearls in today's necklace are made of glass, the dark blue color mixed with black made pearls seem even more mysterious, so in an effort to learn more, I started digging for information about pearls on the Internet.

I was surprised to learn that glass pearls are coated in the same material that are used to coat genuine pearls. Nacre (aka "Mother of Pearl") is the substance that is used, and it's what gives both genuine and glass pearls its lustre.

Speaking of pearls, I read an interesting blog post yesterday over at The Beading Gem's Journal. She had some neat stories to tell about pearls and also wrote a great summary about color and superstitions related to bridal wear. If you are intrigued by the mystery of pearls, take a visit to The Beading Gem's Journal and let Pearl what you think:

That's it for today. If you have any questions about the upcoming Saturday Sparkle column, read yesterday's post or go to my new HANDMADE JEWELRY: SATURDAY SPARKLE group on Flickr for information.

I had no idea that perals were ever considered unlucky! I love them...especially when they are featured as beautifully as in these earings!

Me neither! Thanks also for the compliment Leeann :-)

About This Blog

This blog first started as a way to share the inspiration behind jewelry making with family and friends. Next thing you know, my blogging became a hobby--complete with a logo!

In my not-so-virtual-reality, I'm a freelance technical and marketing communications consultant who spends her time doing geeky things in the high-tech industry. But my real fun comes from making jewelry, which you can find in my Etsy shop at: http://capitolagirl.etsy.com
