Make Me! Monday
A couple weeks ago, I had the good fortune of visiting Chinatown in San Francisco with two of my best friends. Chinatown is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite places in the Bay Area to spend an aimless and undirected day of wandering, shopping, and eating, and drinking. Since neither friend had visited Chinatown before, I warned them in advance that no matter what we did, there were two stores that we absolutely had to visit. One was Asian Renaissance, and the other was Asian Image.
My favorite of the two stores is Asian Image. It's two floors of import shopping, and they carry everything from beautiful Thai Silks to Sake. As I was at the register paying for armfuls of goodies, I saw and heard a bag of beautiful blue, gold, pink, and green Cloisonne beads that started screaming...
"Make Me! Make Me! Make Me!"
Having been raised by an Asian mother, I have been more than properly familiarized with the history, tradition, and superstition of Asian culture. So, I rationalized the purchase by telling myself that not buying those beads would be exactly like giving a purse to a friend as a gift without first putting some money in it. Bad luck, and I don't do bad luck (especially when the the gold bands on this cloisonné piece were twisted, which adds so much more visual interest).
When I got to home back to Capitola, I immediately made this pair of earrings. The beautiful blue and gold beads are no longer screaming at me, because they are now coupled with 14K gold plate rounds and findings, a single Swarovski crystal, and a ribbed metal saucer bead in gold. Instead, they just whisper softly, "Love me!"
These earrings were just posted this morning to my new online jewelry shop on Etsy:
(Shipping on this item is only $1.00 to anywhere in the United States)
